Toni Collette will be featured in the next instalment of the legal drama series “Rake”, which premieres on September 6, 2012 on ABC. Toni guest stars as the Premier of NSW, a character that has her working opposite Matt Day as the Shadow Attorney General, the first time the pair have shared the screen since “Muriel’s Wedding”. “Rake”, stars Richard Roxburgh, who previously worked with Toni on the 2006 thriller “Like Minds”. Unfortunately there’s no information so far if Toni will appear in only one or more episodes – but I’m sure the following pictures and preview trailer will keep you excited until there’s more information. Also, additional features can be found at the series’ official website.

The New York Times has posted a very insightful article on the current making of “The Way, Way Back”, a new comedy by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash with Toni Collette and Steve Carell. When most of America last saw Jim Rash and Nat Faxon together, it was February and they were flanking the filmmaker Alexander Payne on the stage of the Academy Awards as the three men received their Oscars for the screenplay of “The Descendants.” Mr. Faxon was grinning widely, while Mr. Rash flexed an elbow and thrust forward a leg, emulating the posture of his trophy’s presenter, Angelina Jolie.

Five months later Mr. Rash and Mr. Faxon had traded their tuxedos for simple summer clothes as they stood on the sweltering back porch of a beach house here in this bayside town south of Boston, where they were directing their first feature film, “The Way, Way Back.” The narrow porch was crowded with equipment and crew members, and the kitchen packed with stars like Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Amanda Peet and Rob Corddry. While the weather threatened to pivot from grueling heat to pounding rain, Mr. Faxon and Mr. Rash were trading quips about their newfound levels of stress. “Stay around until you see a blowup,” Mr. Rash said, only sort of joking. These two longtime collaborators could have invested their post-Oscars capital into almost anything, whether a big Hollywood studio project or new pools. Instead, before returning to their television day jobs – Mr. Rash plays the spastic college dean on NBC’s “Community,” and Mr. Faxon is starring on a new Fox sitcom, “Ben and Kate” – they are channeling their energies into “The Way, Way Back,” an independent coming-of-age comedy. After its world premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival (which Toni did not attend), reviews and additional media on “Mental” has found its way online. First of all, a bunch of new production stills have been added to the gallery. You can also find a new promotional still and the Australian poster with thanks to my “Mental”-source Justine for the heads-up.

The Hollywood Reporter has seen the film and has posted an interesting review: If there’s method to writer-director PJ Hogan’s madness, it’s not obvious from the unruly opening frames of Mental, a suburban comedy that celebrates mayhem and mischief-making as the correct responses to societal straightjackets. But, aided and abetted by the rule-defying Toni Collette, whose onscreen powers have only multiplied since the two worked together on the much-loved Muriel’s Wedding in 1994, the equally dissident filmmaker soon makes it clear he’s in control of the crazy. The complete review can be read here. There’s another article by the ABC on the film’s opening at the Australian International Movie Convention.

According to Deadline, Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul has been set to star in Long Way Down, the Paschal Chaumeil-directed adaptation of the Nick Hornby novel. Jack Thorne wrote the script and Finola Dwyer is producing. Paul will star opposite Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette and Imogen Poots in a film that focuses on a quartet of people who plan to commit suicide. Paul plays a pizza delivery man, and there is also an embattled television talk show host, a teenaged girl and the mother of a disabled boy. They befriend one another when they meet atop a tall building on New Year’s Eve. The film will shoot in London starting in September.

That was fast. Only a couple of days after the announcement of Toni’s involvement in the new Nicole Holofcener film (see update), actress Julia Louis-Dreyfuss has posted pictures from the making of the film on her WhoSay website, two including Toni. You can find both pictures below.
