After her Golden Globe-nominated role in Netflix’s “Unbelievable” series, Toni Collette will return to the streaming platform to star in a series adaptation of “Pieces of Her”, the thriller novel from author Karin Slaughter. The eight-episode drama will see Collette as Laura, who may seem like the pillar of the community in her small Georgian town, but one trip to the mall explodes into violence and reveals Laura has been lying low for years in the hopes no one would recognize her former identity. The violence and revelations compels her daughter, 30-year-old Andy, on a journey across America to unravel more secrets. “There’s a moment as an adult when you realize that your parents were actual human beings before you were born, and that they had lives. I think a lot of kids cope with that information by ignoring all of it,” Slaughter previously told EW of her book. “They don’t want to know that I was this horrible teenager and I treated my mom like sh— and I actually hurt her feelings, and there are real-life ramifications for hurting another human being.” This is a much different role for Collette than Detective Grace Rasmussen, who investigated a serial rapist with Merrit Wever’s Detective Karen Duvall in Unbelievable. Collette had also previously featured in the ensemble cast of Velvet Buzzsaw, which also found its distribution home on Netflix. She is currently filming a role in Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley, which stars Cate Blanchett and Bradley Cooper. Charlotte Stoudt, a co-executive producer on Fosse/Verdon, wrote the series adaptation and serves as showrunner. Minkie Spiro (The Plot Against America) will direct all eight episodes, while Lesli Linka Glatter and Bruna Papandrea also executive produce. Deadline was the first to report the news.
