Tuesday afternoon, June 24, 2014, saw The Pierre hotel in Manhattan filled with hope and good will as donors and humanitarian workers gathered to celebrate the 12th Annual Women of Concern Awards. These awards have become a jubilant tradition for Concern Worldwide, an NGO established in 1968 whose mission is to diminish and help prevent extreme poverty in regions of the world that are most in need, including countries in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the Caribbean. Siobhan Walsh and Toni Collette, the two honorees for this year’s awards, could not have been more deserving of such recognition. Pictures from the event have been added to the photo gallery. Big thanks to Mari for sending in some great pictures.

Honoree Siobhan Walsh has played a crucial role in Concern’s development and growth for nearly twenty years, and helped establish the organization’s American branch in 1995. Actress Toni Collette, a newer addition to the Concern family, has just this year stepped into her exciting role as Concern’s first Global Ambassador. In the midst of a buzzing cocktail hour prior to the luncheon, Collette took some time to speak with Examiner.com about her involvement with the NGO, and the importance of hugging the world. Their exclusive interview with Toni can be read here.

The Greenwich International Film Festival hosted the screening as its second official event before the inaugural festival, which is planned for June of 2015. Ginger Stickel, the festival’s COO and CFO, described the event as a “friendraiser” to honor Emily Wachtel, screenwriter and producer of “Lucky Them” and a member of the festival’s executive board. Pictures from the screening can be found in the photo gallery with additional information below.

The screening was followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers and Toni Collette, who stars in “Lucky Them” as Ellie Klug, a longtime rock journalist whose editor pushes her to do a story about Matthew Smith, an ex-boyfriend and beloved Seattle musician who disappeared 10 years earlier. The assignment sends her on a search, which Thomas Haden Church joins as a wealthy sidekick who wants to make a documentary about the experience. “I just think it’s so great when anyone is celebrating film,” said Ms. Collette, who has been living in New York as she stars in “The Realistic Joneses” on Broadway. “Especially smaller films that might not actually have the oomph behind them to get out into the world.” Megan Griffiths, the film’s Seattle-based director, said she likes small festivals because of the level of personal attention they are able to provide. “There are people from the festival who really want your film specifically there and when you get there, they just take care of you and make sure people know about your movie,” she said. “You can get a little lost in the shuffle at a bigger festival.” The film is playing in select cities and available on video on demand.
