According to Porchlight Films, Toni Collette has joined the cast of “Jasper Jones”, the film adaptation of the multi-award winning coming of age mystery novel by Craig Silvey. Collette joins Levi Miller, Angourie Rice and Aaron McGrath. Collette will play the role of Ruth Bucktin, mother to Charlie Bucktin (Miller). It is over one eventful summer in 1965 that Charlie, lured by adventure and mystery, experiences the trials of teenage love and discovers what it means to be truly courageous. McGrath has been cast as the titular character Jasper Jones and Rice as the intelligent and mysterious Eliza Wishart, who is also the object of Charlie’s affections.

“Toni Collette is, quite simply, one of the greatest actors of her generation” said producer Vincent Sheehan. “The depth and insight she will bring to the unique role of Ruth Bucktin and having her work alongside the exciting emerging talent in our cast, will be invaluable in bringing Craig Silvey’s acclaimed novel to life.”

The best-selling novel “Jasper Jones” was published in 2009 and has made waves around the globe, with author Craig Silvey receiving critical acclaim and developing an ardent fan base. It has won multiple awards, including the Book of the Year at the Australian Book Industry Awards in 2010 and continues to captivate readers of all ages. “Jasper Jones” will be directed by Rachel Perkins. The film is produced by Bunya Productions David Jowsey and Porchlight Films Vincent Sheehan. Principal photography is set to commence in October in the south west of Western Australia.

See that girl, watch that scene, and then watch it over and over again for 21 years. That’s how often we’ve revisited Muriel’s Wedding, the 1994 Australian rom-com-dram which starred Toni Collette — then just an unknown Oz actress with one film credit to her name — as a social misfit named Muriel Heslop, who dreams of one day getting married to a soundtrack by her favorite band, ABBA. Muriel’s rescued from her dreamy, emotional solitude by a charismatic outsider named Rhonda (Rachel Griffiths, in her first film role) and together, they forge a platonic companionship that remains the reason why, more than two decades after its release, we’re still dreaming of the day we can rock out to “Waterloo” with Muriel and Rhonda. The next best thing? EW’s reunion with Collette and Griffiths, who were eager to get together and relive their days in Porpose Spit. The women reunited for our annual Reunions Issue and spilled some fun secrets from their way to the Wedding. Which celebrities have confessed to be Muriel fans? How did the first-time movie director land the rights to ABBA? And why did the movie almost have a different ending?! Read the complete article over at Entertainment Weekly.

Toni Collette, Tracy Letts and Sam Trammell have joined the cast of “Imperium,” a new film directed by Daniel Ragussis, according to Deadline Hollywood. The film, based on the experiences of retired FBI agent Michael German, will star Daniel Radcliffe as an FBI agent who goes undercover to infiltrate a white supremacist group and expose a terrorist plot to create a dirty bomb. Collette will play Angela Zampino, “a battle-hardened FBI agent.” Letts, the Tony- and Pulitzer-winning author of August: Osage County, will play Dallas Wolf, a “modern-day leader of the white supremacy movement.” Trammell will play Jerry Conrad, an “overtly average father in suburbia who, in actuality, is the local Aryan Youth recruiter.” The script for the film was co-written by Ragussis and German, based on German’s experiences as an undercover agent who spent years inside U.S.-based neo-Nazi and militia groups.
