Entertainment Weekly has graced Netflix’ “Unbelievable” with a B+ rating for its Friday premiere: Unbelievable’s Detective Grace Rasmussen (Toni Collette) is mad. She and fellow Detective Karen Duvall (Merritt Wever) have been investigating a serial rapist for months, and progress is painfully slow. When FBI agent Billy Taggart (Scott Lawrence) seems to downplay a potential lead, Grace explodes. “No one is looking at this data about violence against women! I mean, what if men were raped at the rate women are?” she asks Karen. “What if Taggart were afraid that someone was going to f— him in the ass when he’s walking home from the grocery store at night?… Where is his outrage?” Based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning ProPublica article and created by Oscar-nominated writer Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich), Unbelievable is a sturdy true-crime drama, but where it excels is as an examination of the gap between the male and female experience. When a teenager named Marie (Booksmart’s Kaitlyn Dever) reports being raped in her Lynnwood, Washington, apartment, it doesn’t take long for police — and even Marie’s former foster mother Judith (Elizabeth Marvel) — to start doubting her story. After all, what’s more likely — that a masked man methodically terrorized Marie at knifepoint, or that the troubled teen, who had been known to act out, made it all up for attention? The action then jumps forward three years to Colorado, where Detective Rasmussen and Duvall are investigating two separate but very similar rapes. When Grace and Karen talk to the survivors – who each live alone and say their attacker took pictures of them and made them shower after the assault – they listen. When a victim feels guilty for blocking out details of her attack, Grace and Karen say things like, “Please don’t apologize for doing what you needed to do to feel safe.” They understand in a way that their male colleagues, quite frankly, cannot. Netflix’s “Unbelievable” trailer introduces Emmy winners Toni Collette and Merrit Wever as detectives Grace Rasmussen and Karen Duvall, who come across two familiar-sounding cases. As Entertainment Weekly reports, hundreds of miles away in a different state, Marie Adler (Kaitlyn Dever), a teenage girl, filed a police report that claimed she was sexually assaulted by an intruder in her home. The police kept trying to poke holes in her story and ultimately determined she wasn’t credible and that there was no victim in this case. Meanwhile, Grace and Karen discover two new rapes on their own turf with the same M.O. as Marie’s alleged attacker. Thus begins the search for a potential serial rapist.

Does this story already sound familiar? That’s because the series is based on the true events in T. Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong’s Pulitzer Prize-winning article from ProPublica and The Marshall Project titled “An Unbelievable Story of Rape,” as well as the radio episode of This American Life tackling this same subject, “Anatomy of Doubt.” The trailer description comes with contact information for RAINN’s National Sexual Assault Hotline for anyone who has experienced sexual violence in their lives. The number for the hotline is 800.656.HOPE (4673) and the website is online.rainn.org. Unbelievable debuts on Netflix Sep. 13.

Great article by The Hollywood Reporter about Toni’s upcoming Netflix series: When the article “An Unbelievable Story of Rape” was published in 2015, it didn’t get much attention in Hollywood. But times have changed, and the now-newsy story (by ProPublica’s T. Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong of The Marshall Project) will soon be available on Netflix as an eight-part series. The story centers on a woman who reported being raped at knifepoint only to end up being prosecuted for lying. Two female detectives then look into the case and come to a surprising conclusion. Pulitzer Prize-winner Michael Chabon and his wife, Ayelet Waldman, pursued an adaptation shortly after the article was published but had a hard time getting traction. “Nobody wanted to talk about rape,” Waldman (joined by Chabon at the Hammer Museum’s Gala in the Garden earlier this fall) told THR of the piece, which won a 2016 Pulitzer Prize in the Explanatory Reporting category. Enter Netflix, which picked it up at the start of the year, ordering it to series and gathering a team that also included Susannah Grant, Katie Couric, Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly (who had also been pursuing it independently). The limited series, which recently wrapped production, stars Toni Collette, Merritt Wever and Kaitlyn Dever. “History caught up,” adds Waldman. “It’s a show about believing women, and we couldn’t have a better moment to show America what happens when you don’t believe women.”
