Life after Tara: What’s next for Toni Collette

With yesterday’s series finale of “United States of Tara”, Toni Collette won’t be a weekly regular on television anymore, at least not for now. For all wondering what will be next, Toni has wrapped three films already and another one in the making – so even if “Tara” has ended, Miss Collette’s career will not :-) First in line is the anticipated remake of “Fright Night”, which will premiere in US theaters on August 19, 2011. Then, there are two independent drama comedies with no release date as of now – “Jesus Henry Christ”, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, and “Foster”. This Summer, Toni will also reunite with her “Muriel’s Wedding” director, P.J. Hogan, for the dark Australian comedy “Mental”, in which Toni will play the lead role of Shaz, a nanny hired to look after five sisters after their mother is committed to a mental institution.

The first reviews for “Jesus Henry Christ” are in after the film world-premiered this Saturday at the Tribeca Film Festival and the critics are rather disappointed with the film, as it seems. Here are a few snippets.

I suppose that this movie was inevitable. After a decade in which “500 Days of Summer,” “Little Miss Sunshine” and “Juno” made great success out of quirky humor and eccentric characters, we were bound to some day find ourselves face to face with a miserably mediocre attempt to keep the creativity going. “Jesus Henry Christ” tries so hard to be original, cute, funny and unique but just ends up looking foolish and exhausted. Bad jokes, over-extended gimmicks and horribly written supporting characters whirl around your head as you attempt to find some sort of redeeming narrative. Unfortunately, not even the heavy handed voice-over helps with that. [...] Toni Collette and Michael Sheen are quite good and offer genuine humanity to roles that don’t have much of it on the page

Collette’s character faces moments of emotional difficulty along the lines of “The Sixth Sense,” and the movie’s attempts at wacky comedy and poignancy call back, rather baldly, to her turn in “Little Miss Sunshine,” without quite the same results. Lee’s movie, shifting abruptly between earnest drama and cartoonish comedy, was tepidly received by the Tribeca crowd – but not specifically because of Collette’s performance.

Initial selections have been announced for the 10th Tribeca Film Festival, which will take place from April 20 to May 1 at various venues in lower Manhattan. A complete list of films will be announced on March 14. Among the films to be shown is Dennis Lee’s “Jesus Henry Christ”, about a 10-year-old boy genius’ search for his biological father, starring Toni Collette and Michael Sheen. The first two stills from the film can be found below.

Precocious doesn’t even begin to describe Henry James Hermin, a petri dish child who writes rabble-rousing manifestos on the nature of truth… at age 10. This boy-genius misfit’s world turns upside down when – to the dismay of the doting single mother who raised him – he embarks on a search for his biological father. Toni Collette and Michael Sheen star alongside bright newcomers Jason Spevack and Samantha Weinstein in this charming comedy that beams with off-the-wall humor and visual flair.

Toni is currently shooting “Jesus Henry Christ” in Toronto. Pictures from July 05, 2010 have been added to the Image Library. At the age of ten, young genius Henry James Hermin (Jason Spevack), a boy who was conceived in a petri dish and raised by his feminist mother (Toni Collette), decides his mother’s love is not enough. After discovering he has a half sister, he follows a string of Post-It notes in hopes of finding his biological father. His father, Dr. O’Hara (Michael Sheen), is overcome with feelings of guilt and depression, but finds hope at the news he has a son.

If all the recently annocunced projects (see here and here) are really being made, Toni will have a busy schedule between shooting the third “Tara” season. According to Deadline Hollywood, Reliance is financing the Julia Roberts-produced “Jesus Henry Christ”, written and to be directed by Dennis Lee (Fireflies in the Garden). Michael Sheen stars with Toni Collette. Roberts is making the film through her Red Om production company. So far there is no official confirmation nor a synopsis.
