“Birthmarked” has been one of Toni’s more recent films that have been quietly released on demand without any big exposure or recognition (see “Please Stand By” and “The Yellow Birds”, and we’re only talking 2018). Its biggest retailer is Netflix, which is not bad at all – and it’s certainly not a bad film. From its outlook, I was expecting something like “Jesus Henry Christ”, a comedy that Toni did some ten years ago, and which wasn’t particularly entertaining, but “Birthmarked” has the heart at its right place. It has some fine performances by Matthew Goode, Michael Smiley and Fionnula Flanagan – it has the right (not very surprising, but fitting) twist. I found it enjoyable. Over 1.000 screencaptures have been added to the photo gallery. Make sure to see the film if you can.

It’s been merely four weeks since we got a chance to watch the theatrical trailer for “Birthmarked”, an odd-quirky comedy starring Toni Collette and Matthew Goode, which has been filmed last year. Now, it has received a theatrical release – THIS WEEK! As its distributor Vertical Entertainment has posted on its Facebook page, “Birthmarked” will be released across the USA on March 30th. A complete list of venues can be found below. No word on further international releases yet or an on-demand premiere, so we’ll see. The fast release will most likely mean that there will not be a lot (or any) promotion for the release, which would be a shame. Here’s the official synopsis: “When two respected scientists quit their jobs at a prestigious university and tackle their biggest experiment to date – parenthood! Raising three children against their genetic predispositions, they seek to prove that everyone has the same potential to become anything they choose. The big question being, are we born as we are, or can we blame our parents for who we become? Hilarity ensues as this unconventional family soon discovers the ultimate power of nurture over nature.”

With many thanks to Item7, here’s a first look at Toni Collette and Matthew Goode in the upcoming “Birthmarked”. Collette and Goode are portraying two respected scientists who quit their university jobs in 1977 to conduct an experiment they think will revolutionize understanding of human identity. The project aims to raise three children contrarily to their genetic predispositions to prove the ultimate power of nurture over nature with a newborn girl adopted from two feeble-minded parents, is raised to be smart; a newborn boy adopted from two anger-prone parents is raised to be a pacifist; and their own biological son, who comes from a long lineage of scientific brains, is raised to become a revered artist. “Birthmarked” can be expected to release in late 2017, early 2018.
