Tuesday afternoon, June 24, 2014, saw The Pierre hotel in Manhattan filled with hope and good will as donors and humanitarian workers gathered to celebrate the 12th Annual Women of Concern Awards. These awards have become a jubilant tradition for Concern Worldwide, an NGO established in 1968 whose mission is to diminish and help prevent extreme poverty in regions of the world that are most in need, including countries in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the Caribbean. Siobhan Walsh and Toni Collette, the two honorees for this year’s awards, could not have been more deserving of such recognition. Pictures from the event have been added to the photo gallery. Big thanks to Mari for sending in some great pictures.

Honoree Siobhan Walsh has played a crucial role in Concern’s development and growth for nearly twenty years, and helped establish the organization’s American branch in 1995. Actress Toni Collette, a newer addition to the Concern family, has just this year stepped into her exciting role as Concern’s first Global Ambassador. In the midst of a buzzing cocktail hour prior to the luncheon, Collette took some time to speak with Examiner.com about her involvement with the NGO, and the importance of hugging the world. Their exclusive interview with Toni can be read here.

The cast of “The Realistic Joneses” and its creator, Will Enos, have been honored with a Drama Desk Special Award, which recognizes excellence and significant contributions to the theater. The honor is given to Enos and the casts of both the “Joneses” and Off-Broadway’s “The Open House” “ror two extraordinary casts and one impressively inventive playwright”. Toni has attended their nominees reception in New York. Pictures can be found in the image library.

Here’s another great find from the archives. In 2000, Toni received a Tony Award nomination as Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for playing Queenie in “The Wild Party”, only months after receiving an Oscar nomination for “The Sixth Sense”. The Tony went to Heather Headley for “Aida”. But maybe, with the recent news of Toni’s return to Broadway in “The Realistic Joneses”, we’ll be seeing her at the ceremony again soon.

Unfortunately, Toni has not received an Emmy nomination this morning for the third and final season of “United States of Tara”. The category for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series includes Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), Tina Fey (30 Rock), Laura Linney (The Big C, a deserving winner in my opinion ;-), Melissa McCarthy (Mike and Molly), Martha Plimpton (Raising Hope) and Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation). Nevertheless, Toni has won her Emmy already in 2009 for “Tara”, so things could be worse ;-)
